Taylor Swift, Capitalism, & Race [Part A1]

Because Taylor Swift is a white (middle?) upper class to 1%er she is a face of capitalism, intentional or not.  I’m going to disperse Taylor Swift’s wealth, business, real estate, and general **Capitalist Queen** deets between supporting evidence that Capitalism is inextricably exploitative, and racist.  Not wanting to come across as a hater picking on one individual when the problem is systemic, I have also included many (not all) donations Taylor Swift has made over the years.

Capitalism and white supremacy are intimately related–it is built into the structures of the market. Capitalism was founded on the belief that it is separate from other social institutions, that it is self-regulating, and that it operates without bias. The way that Adam Smith (credited for conceptualizing capitalism) envisions the free market seems to result in a system that gives everyone equal chances at sustaining themselves in society (20).

Proponents of capitalism have always touted how the economic system provides one the opportunity to attain upward social and economic mobility simply when one picks him/herself up by the bootstrap and works hard towards achieving that goal (21). Yet, how the market functions shows otherwise (20).

What this oversimplified narrative carefully ignores is the fact that the initial endowment of resources (wealth, assets, land ownership, and skin color) is often not the same for people of different races (21).

Smith’s free market depends on the idea that all actors are able to make whichever decisions in their self-interest and that no one is able to be coerced into making decisions against their will. His belief in capitalism’s ability to provide the needs for all assumes that, technically, all those who are involved in the market are in a certain sense choosing to take part in it, which means that they have the desires, resources, and knowledge to do so. Marking the market an impersonal, autonomous system is impossible. Sociologists, anthropologists, and political theorists have dismantled this long-standing assumption and show that the market and society are deeply embedded in one another (20).

There's more, but this is important and I want you to read all of it so I split it up.
