Pre-Packing [Moving Tips Series] {both}

Pre-packing is a lot of lists and planning.  You want to start out as organized as possible.  And you want a good record of what you own.  This part can be as arduous as you want but at least do the following things before putting anything in a box.

Before anything goes into a box, take a slow video of everything. SLOW. Like, if this were stolen does this video either show it or allow you to describe the item in detail in an insurance claim? Take pictures too. Especially of the stuff you really like.

For groups of items I made a spreadsheet listing each one

Book example:

Here's part of the map-

This is page 1 of the inventory-

DVDs:

Those claims make you say the following things about each item missing/stolen:

description of what the item is

find the exact or very similar item on an Amazon-like database

where was the item (laundry room, garage, kitchen, etc)

year purchased

condition of item (new, good, fair)

Actual example of part of the finalized list (each item on the list opens to the above details):

Also, list the things you cannot move yourself. Not things you don't want to-things you actually can't.

ours were:

  • Heavy cube shelf-dining room
  • Blue TV shelf-upstairs
  • Eliptical-bike-mainfloor bedroom
  • Kitchen island-kitchen
  • Mattress-uncarpeted main floor
