Swiftionary:  Cars/Driving & related [B. Meaning 8- Privacy]

There are a lot of songs for this Swiftionary entry so I think it’ll get too long if we go over the meanings all in one post as we have for the other words.  I already put them into categories so we’ll do a small series within the series to keep things readable.

Having privacy

--> I decided that more than falling in love in a car, or having a lot of memories from inside of cars, that the main factor in these lyrics was privacy.  Being alone, away from prying eyes, and image control, and expectations, gave Taylor the space to feel her genuine feelings.  The rest of the times she has responsibilities and people pressuring her overtly or subconsciously and it makes her more reserved in her truths.  She is Bejewled brand Taylor in public, but in the privacy of a car, she can be herself and feel her feelings.

  • 2 AM riding in your truck, and all I need is you next to me [Mary’s Song (Oh My My My)/Debut]
    • Memories of being in a vehicle
    • Togetherness in private
  • I wanna stay right here in this passenger’s seat, you put your eyes on me [Fearless/Fearless]
    • The car gives space for just the two of them.  She feels special.
  • We’re driving down the road, I wonder if you know [Fearless/Fearless]
    • There is tension and sparks
    • She wonders if the other person feels the same, and notices her crush.
  • Two headlights shine through the sleepless night and I will get you, I’ll get you alone [Treacherous/Red]
    • Two headlights are kinda like 2 people.
    • It's night, and they will have privacy.
  • And I was thinking on the drive down, anytime now he’s gonna say it’s love [All Too Well 10/Red]
    • Similar sentiment to Fearless: We’re driving down the road, I wonder if you know
    • There is tension and sparks
    • She's waiting and hoping and wishing for him to put a name on what they have
  • I was riding in the car when we both fell [The Very First Night/Red]
    • The car is the spot where they were able to be alone, and in that moment of freedom and escape, Taylor could live her true feelings.
  • They weren’t riding in the car when we both fell [The Very First Night/Red]
    • Other people couldn't understand bc they're not in it.
    • Taylor and this person had chemistry that only they understand.
  • It’s 2 AM in my room, headlights pass the window pane, I think of you [I Wish You Would/1989]
    • The headlights remind Taylor of this person and their times together.
    • This relationship and the privacy of the car are linked
  • You squeeze my hand three times in the back of the taxi [New Year’s Day/Reputation]
    • This is a signal or familiar sign between just the two people in a ride with a stranger
  • To kiss in cars and downtown bars was all we needed [Cardigan/folklore]
    • When they were alone everything was perfect
  • Standing in your cardigan, kissing in my car again [Betty/folklore]
    • Memories of happier times when they were alone
  • I parked my car right between the Methodist and the school that used to be ours [‘Tis The Damn Season/evermore]
    • This is their familiar spot, and Taylor parked where she used to (view obstructed?)
  • Started with a kiss/"Oh, we must stop meeting like this"/But it always ends up with a Town Car speeding [The Bolter/TTPD]
    • It's a surreptitious meeting in the privacy of the car

And too much time in isolation with somebody equals trouble:

  • Remember when I pulled up and said, “Get in the car” [August/folklore]
    • James and August started something after they were alone
  • She said, “James, get in, let’s drive” [Betty/folklore]
    • It was a temptation that James gave in to when he found himself hurting and alone with Augusta
